Cell-Based Safety Assessment: The Emergence of High-Content Screening as a Tool for Safety Assessment

Drug safety challenges rank as the leading cause of attrition of compounds in clinical development, and continue to play a dominant role in the pharmaceutical industry’s ongoing struggles to more efficiently bring innovative drugs to market.  These costly late-stage failures are in large part, a function of the poor predictivity of early-stage safety assessment methods, which allows too many compounds with poor safety characteristics to advance into clinical development while potentially superior compounds languish on the shelf

Recently, however, the maturing capabilities of cell-based, or high-content, assays have raised hopes that early compound safety screening methods may be entering a new era of effectiveness, much as had previously been accomplished with in vitro assessment methods for pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics.
